Bengaluru: In a decisive move to curb corruption and promote transparency, the Karnataka government has directed all its offices to mandatorily install ‘Do not give bribes’ boards. The initiative aims to discourage bribery and empower citizens to report corrupt practices.
The directive has been issued by Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary of Karnataka, as part of broader efforts to improve accountability in government functioning.
Mandatory display across all offices
As per the order, all government offices, including departments, boards, corporations, and aided institutions across the state, must prominently display boards carrying the message “Do not give bribes.”
The boards will also include clear instructions for citizens on the steps to take if they are asked for a bribe. This includes details on how to file complaints and report instances of corruption.
Lokayukta details to be included
The directive specifies that the boards must display the helpline number and contact details of the Karnataka Lokayukta. Citizens can use these channels to lodge complaints or share information regarding corrupt practices.
Additionally, all heads of departments, secretaries, and additional chief secretaries have been instructed to install separate boards containing comprehensive details of the Lokayukta’s head office and district offices, including telephone numbers, addresses, and email IDs.
Clear anti-corruption message
The message on the boards will read:
“Do not give bribes. If anyone in this office demands a bribe or if you have information regarding corruption, you may lodge a complaint with the concerned authorities or the Karnataka Lokayukta.”
Officials believe that prominently displaying such messages will act as a deterrent and encourage citizens to take a stand against bribery.
Bilingual approach for wider reach
In line with recommendations of the Karnataka Administrative Reforms Committee-2, the government has decided to display these messages in both Kannada and English. This ensures that the message reaches a wider section of the public and enhances awareness about anti-corruption measures.
Strengthening transparency and accountability
The move is part of ongoing administrative reforms aimed at improving transparency in public offices. By providing citizens with direct access to complaint mechanisms, the government hopes to reduce instances of corruption and build trust in public institutions.
Conclusion
The mandatory installation of ‘Do not give bribes’ boards marks a proactive step by the Karnataka government to tackle corruption at the grassroots level. By combining awareness with accessible reporting mechanisms, the initiative seeks to create a more transparent and accountable governance system across the state.
