The Karnataka government is exploring a strategic collaboration with Japan to develop smart city solutions in Bengaluru, aimed at addressing key urban challenges.

The initiative is being pursued in partnership with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), which supports global collaborations between cities and Japanese companies.

Focus on future-ready urban solutions

IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge said the state aims to build resilient and citizen-centric cities through the partnership.

The collaboration will focus on sectors such as energy, wastewater management, mobility, and disaster preparedness—areas critical to Bengaluru’s rapid urban growth.

Structured three-stage approach

According to officials, the proposed model will follow a phased approach:

  • Signing an agreement with the Greater Bengaluru Authority
  • Identifying priority urban challenges
  • Implementing solutions with participation from Japanese private sector firms

This framework is expected to ensure targeted and effective execution of projects.

Leveraging innovation and startups

The state also plans to integrate innovation-driven approaches, including challenge grants and startup-led solutions, to address urban issues.

Officials highlighted Karnataka’s strong startup ecosystem as a key advantage in implementing scalable and technology-driven solutions.

Expanding global partnerships

A similar collaboration model is already underway with the Thane Municipal Corporation, and Japan has expressed interest in extending it to Karnataka.

The move reflects Bengaluru’s growing importance as a global technology hub and its need for sustainable infrastructure to support future growth.
