With the new academic year approaching, the Karnataka transport department has directed state-run road transport corporations to introduce student-friendly measures including special buses, increased peak-hour services, and stricter safety standards.
The move follows recommendations by the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to improve safety and accessibility for students dependent on public transport.
More buses during school hours
The department has asked KSRTC, BMTC, North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation to increase bus frequency during busy morning and evening hours.
Operators have also been told to introduce or adjust routes matching school and college timings.
Committees to monitor student safety
District-level student transport safety committees led by deputy commissioners will be formed to oversee implementation.
These panels will focus on preventing overcrowding, ensuring students are not forced to travel standing, and improving access in urban and rural areas.
CCTV, station upgrades planned
The department has also called for improvements at bus stands and stations, including CCTV camera installation and better passenger facilities.
Authorities have been instructed to strictly enforce a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment and safety violations involving students.
Focus on rural and weaker sections
Officials said safe public transport is essential for protecting children’s right to education, particularly for students from rural and economically weaker families who rely heavily on buses.
Former KSCPCR member KT Thippeswamy welcomed the move, calling it an important step toward child-friendly transport
