Bengaluru: Karnataka recorded 725 pregnancies among girls aged 14 to 17 between April and July 2026, according to data shared by the state government. The figures, updated as of August 5, show that 17-year-old girls accounted for the overwhelming majority of the cases.

The data was shared by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar in response to a question raised by BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar during the ongoing Assembly session.

17-year-olds account for most cases

Of the 725 cases recorded between April and July, 21 involved 14-year-old girls, while 56 cases were reported among 15-year-olds.

Another 127 cases involved 16-year-old girls, while 521 cases were recorded among 17-year-olds.

The figures highlight the sharp concentration of teenage pregnancies among girls in the 17-year age group.

Raichur records highest number

Raichur recorded the highest number of teenage pregnancies among girls aged 14 to 17, with 100 cases during the period.

Among 14-year-old girls, Hassan recorded the highest number, with three cases.

The government data also indicates a decline in teenage pregnancies compared with previous years. Karnataka recorded 4,579 teenage pregnancies in 2024-25, while the number fell to 3,308 in 2025-26.

With 725 cases reported between April and July 2026, the cumulative number of pregnancies among girls aged 14 to 17 stands at 8,612 during the period covered by the data.

Poverty and exploitation among concerns

Feminist activist and writer Roopa Hassan said several factors could contribute to teenage pregnancies. She noted that although incidents of child marriage are declining, teenage pregnancies continue due to other factors, including alleged cheating and human trafficking.

According to Hassan, girls from economically weaker sections form a significant proportion of those affected. She also pointed to poverty and difficult family circumstances as factors that can increase vulnerability.

The figures have renewed attention on the need for stronger protection, awareness and support systems for adolescent girls across Karnataka
