Children across all schools in Karnataka will now be required to spend 10 minutes each morning reading newspapers during assembly hours, following a directive issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy.

The new practice will apply to government, aided and unaided schools across the state, along with residential schools, hostels and child care institutions run by various government departments.

Reading after morning prayer

Officials said students will read Kannada newspapers for 10 minutes daily after the morning prayer session.

The initiative was proposed earlier by the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, which wrote to the education department recommending the move.

Why the step was taken

Authorities expressed concern that children are increasingly absorbed in mobile phones, entertainment content and social media platforms.

The recommendation noted that excessive screen exposure may affect memory, reduce physical activity and distract children from productive habits.

Officials believe regular newspaper reading can improve awareness and discipline among students.

Benefits for students

The department said reading newspapers daily can help children prepare for competitive examinations and improve their understanding of current affairs.

It is also expected to strengthen vocabulary, language skills, writing style and reading habits.

Students will gain exposure to developments in politics, science, technology, sports and world events.

Experts welcome decision

Shashidar B said the habit of newspaper reading is essential in the digital age, where children must stay informed beyond entertainment content.

He added that the purpose is to encourage reading culture, and schools may choose newspapers suitable for their students.

Focus now on implementation

Officials said teachers and district-level authorities must now ensure the policy is implemented effectively across Karnataka schools.

The move is being seen as a step towards balancing digital exposure with informed learning
