Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Health Department has designated specialised isolation, quarantine and treatment facilities in government-run hospitals in Bengaluru and Mangaluru as a precautionary preparedness measure following an Ebola alert. Authorities clarified that no Ebola cases have been reported in India so far, but surveillance systems and emergency response mechanisms have been strengthened across the State to ensure readiness in the event of any suspected cases.

The move comes following directions from the Union Health Ministry to all States and Union Territories to reinforce disease surveillance, hospital preparedness and rapid response systems.

Dedicated facilities identified in Bengaluru and Mangaluru

As part of the preparedness measures, health authorities have identified specific hospitals to manage quarantine and treatment requirements in case of suspected Ebola-related cases.

In Mangaluru, Srinivas Port Hospital has been designated as the quarantine centre, while Wenlock District Hospital has been identified as the isolation and treatment facility.

Dedicated ambulance services have also been arranged to ensure the safe transportation of suspected patients to designated hospitals whenever required.

Similarly, in Bengaluru, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases has been identified as the isolation centre, while the Epidemic Diseases Hospital has been assigned the role of quarantine and treatment facility.

Officials stated that these measures are preventive in nature and are intended to ensure immediate medical response capabilities if the need arises.

Surveillance intensified across Karnataka

The Health Department said surveillance and monitoring activities have been intensified across Karnataka even though no confirmed Ebola cases have been detected in the country.

Officials stated that monitoring of suspected cases under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) has been strengthened.

Health authorities have also increased coordination with airports and other Points of Entry (PoEs) to identify and monitor travellers arriving from countries considered affected by the disease.

Enhanced screening and monitoring systems are expected to help identify potential risks at an early stage and ensure prompt intervention.

Authorities said disease surveillance remains an important part of preparedness planning, particularly in situations involving international health concerns.

Rapid response teams placed on alert

As part of precautionary arrangements, Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have been placed on alert throughout Karnataka.

These teams are expected to respond quickly to any suspected cases and support containment measures if required.

Officials stated that infection prevention and control protocols in hospitals have also been strengthened to minimise any potential risk of disease transmission.

The department said healthcare facilities have been instructed to maintain readiness levels and follow standard procedures for handling suspected infectious disease cases.

Authorities have also taken steps to ensure that hospitals are equipped with essential resources and emergency supplies.

Training and medical preparedness strengthened

The Health Department said healthcare workers and medical personnel are undergoing training programmes aimed at handling suspected Ebola cases.

Officials noted that staff members are being sensitised about infection control practices, patient handling procedures and protective measures.

The department further stated that adequate stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE), medicines and laboratory support systems have been ensured.

The objective of the preparedness initiative is to build healthcare capacity and minimise response time if any situation arises.

Health officials reiterated that the current measures should not be interpreted as an indication of any confirmed outbreak within Karnataka or India.

Authorities urge caution, not panic

Health authorities emphasised that the steps being taken are precautionary and are part of standard public health preparedness measures followed during international disease alerts.

Officials have urged people not to panic and stated that continuous monitoring and coordinated response systems are already in place.

Preparedness measures such as designated hospitals, surveillance mechanisms and trained medical personnel are aimed at strengthening the healthcare system’s ability to respond effectively to emerging health concerns.

With no Ebola cases reported in India so far, the focus remains on vigilance, early detection and ensuring readiness to protect public health.
