Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has introduced a new paid pick-up option exclusively for corporate cab services, adding another layer to its evolving transport and parking management system. The initiative has been launched on a trial basis by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the airport operator, amid ongoing efforts to regulate traffic flow and address congestion at terminal curbsides.
Airport officials said the move is part of a “soft rollout” and will be reviewed based on feedback from users and service providers.
Premium pick-up facility at Terminal 1
Under the new arrangement, a dedicated premium pick-up facility has been created at Terminal 1 on the departures level. The designated pick-up point is located in the fifth lane of the terminal, allowing corporate cab users to access passengers closer to the terminal entrance compared to conventional pick-up zones.
According to BIAL officials, corporate taxis using this premium zone will be charged ₹275 for the first 10 minutes. If the vehicle remains in the area beyond this initial period, an additional charge of ₹150 will be levied for every extra five minutes.
Officials said the pricing structure is intended to discourage prolonged waiting while offering a quicker and more convenient pick-up option for corporate travellers who value time efficiency.
Objective behind the new system
Airport authorities stated that the premium pick-up model is aimed at better regulation of vehicle movement at terminal curbs, which often witness congestion, especially during peak travel hours.
“By introducing a paid, time-bound pick-up option, we hope to streamline traffic, reduce crowding and provide differentiated services for various user groups,” an airport official said. The official added that the trial phase would help assess demand and operational challenges before any wider rollout.
The corporate cab category primarily caters to business travellers, employees of large firms and managed transport services operated by companies, which often require predictable and faster pick-up arrangements.
Wider changes to airport parking norms
The introduction of the premium pick-up zone comes amid broader changes to parking and pick-up regulations at KIA, several of which have sparked criticism from cab drivers and passengers in recent weeks.
In response to feedback and protests, BIAL has already relaxed some of its earlier norms for commercial vehicles. One key change came into effect on December 26, 2025, when the free waiting time for commercial vehicles at the Terminal 1 arrivals area was increased from 10 minutes to 15 minutes.
This revision was welcomed by drivers, who had argued that the earlier 10-minute window was insufficient, particularly when passengers were delayed due to baggage collection or security checks.
Revised rules for commercial vehicles
Earlier regulations introduced on December 13 required commercial vehicles to wait at designated P3 and P4 parking areas, with only 10 minutes of free parking allowed. Under the revised system, drivers now get 15 minutes of free parking.
After the free period, a charge of ₹100 is applicable for the first 30 minutes, followed by ₹50 for every additional hour. Airport authorities said the revised structure aims to balance operational efficiency with affordability for drivers.
However, many cab operators continue to express concern over cumulative costs, especially for drivers who make multiple airport trips in a day.
Protests and stakeholder feedback
The initial rollout of the new parking and pick-up framework triggered strong opposition from cab drivers. On December 16, hundreds of drivers staged a protest near the Sadahalli toll gate, alleging that the revised rules significantly increased operating costs and made airport pick-ups more complicated.
Driver associations argued that frequent changes in rules, combined with higher parking charges, were affecting their earnings and causing confusion among passengers. Some drivers also complained that inadequate signage and communication led to penalties even when violations were unintentional.
Following the protest, BIAL held discussions with driver representatives and agreed to make certain concessions, including extending the free waiting period at Terminal 1 arrivals.
Mixed reactions from passengers and operators
Passengers have expressed mixed views on the new premium pick-up option. While some corporate travellers welcomed the faster and more direct access, others questioned whether additional charges would eventually be passed on to customers through higher fares.
Cab operators, meanwhile, said clarity would be needed on which services qualify as “corporate cabs” and how enforcement would be carried out on the ground. They also sought assurance that the premium zone would not reduce access or space for regular pick-ups.
Airport officials said detailed guidelines would be issued during the trial phase and adjustments would be made based on operational experience.
Conclusion
The introduction of a paid premium pick-up zone for corporate cabs marks another step in KIA’s attempt to manage growing traffic volumes and diversify transport services at one of India’s busiest airports. While the facility promises convenience for a specific segment of users, its long-term success will depend on fair pricing, clear communication and responsiveness to feedback from drivers and passengers alike. As BIAL continues to fine-tune parking and pick-up norms, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the new system evolves.
