An eight-year-old boy from Bengaluru was killed in a suspected leopard attack during a trek near Nagamale close to Male Mahadeshwara Hills on Sunday, officials said.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred while the child was trekking with family members and others in the forested region near MM Hills, a known wildlife habitat in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district.

According to reports, the leopard suddenly attacked the boy, causing fatal injuries before nearby people could react. Forest officials and local authorities later reached the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.

Forest officials begin inquiry

Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and assessing wildlife movement in the area.

Forest department personnel are also expected to increase monitoring and patrols around trekking routes and nearby settlements following the incident.

Officials have urged visitors travelling through forest regions to remain cautious and follow safety advisories issued by the department.

Human-wildlife conflict concerns rise

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over increasing human-wildlife interactions in forest-edge regions of Karnataka.

Wildlife experts say factors such as habitat disturbance, shrinking forest cover, and increased human activity near wildlife corridors can contribute to such encounters.

MM Hills and surrounding forest zones are known habitats for leopards, elephants, and other wild animals.

Safety measures advised

Authorities and wildlife experts recommend the following precautions while visiting forested areas:

  • Avoid isolated trekking routes
  • Travel in groups
  • Follow designated forest paths
  • Avoid trekking during dawn or dusk
  • Do not approach or provoke wildlife
  • Follow instructions from forest officials
