Bengaluru: What began as a naturally sprouting sapling in the courtyard of an 85-year-old Bengaluru resident’s home has ended in an extraordinary story of patience, conservation and an unexpected reward worth nearly Rs 28 lakh.

For around 40 years, NG Kesari cared for a sandalwood tree that had grown on its own in his courtyard. Rather than cutting it down, he chose to protect it, watching it mature into a valuable tree over the decades.

Protected the tree from smugglers

As the sandalwood tree grew, its value attracted the attention of smugglers and thieves. Determined to safeguard it, Kesari installed a strong iron cage around the tree, ensuring it remained protected for years despite repeated threats.

However, heavy rain and strong winds in June brought an unexpected twist. A neighbouring tree collapsed onto the sandalwood tree, uprooting it.

Followed the law despite its value

Instead of trying to sell the valuable timber privately, Kesari immediately informed the forest department. After obtaining the required permissions, the fallen tree was transported to the government sandalwood depot in Mysuru.

Officials found that the sandalwood weighed approximately one tonne.

The tree was later purchased by Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, one of the country’s leading users of sandalwood for its products. After the sale, Kesari received a net amount of around Rs 28 lakh.

Honoured for conservation

Beyond the financial reward, the Karnataka government recognised Kesari’s decades-long commitment to conserving the valuable tree by presenting him with the ‘Sandalwood Shiromani’ award.

His remarkable journey highlights the importance of protecting natural resources and following legal procedures.
