A Bengaluru resident has approached the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), alleging illegal detention and repeated harassment by personnel attached to Tilaknagar Police Station over suspicions regarding his nationality.

The complainant, Md. Sheikh, a resident of RMV 2nd Stage, submitted a petition to the Commission claiming that he was wrongfully accused of being a Bangladeshi national and subjected to prolonged questioning without due process.

Allegations of illegal detention

According to the complaint, Sheikh alleged that police personnel detained him on February 25, 2026, while he was in Samchandrapalya and took him to Tilaknagar Police Station for inquiry.

He claimed that he was kept at the police station from noon until around 9.30 pm and questioned extensively about his family, occupation, personal background and native village in West Bengal.

The complainant further alleged that his mobile phone was seized during the inquiry and returned only when he was released later that evening.

Claims of continued harassment

Sheikh alleged that police officials continued contacting him even after his release. He also claimed that a police officer recently visited his locality and sought identity documents belonging to his wife, daughter, parents and other relatives.

According to the complaint, he was accused of being a Bangladeshi national and of helping illegal migrants settle in Bengaluru.

Rejecting the allegations, Sheikh stated that he had previously cooperated with law enforcement agencies and had even assisted police during operations targeting suspected illegal immigrants.

Seeks Human Rights Commission intervention

The complainant told the Commission that the repeated inquiries have caused distress to him and his family and could potentially affect his housing arrangements.

He has sought an inquiry into the alleged illegal detention and harassment and requested the Commission to direct police to produce station diary records, CCTV footage and documents related to the inquiry.

There has been no immediate response from Tilaknagar Police Station regarding the allegations. The matter is expected to come up before the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission for consideration.
