Bengaluru: A 34-year-old woman from Meghalaya was found dead in her rented accommodation in north Bengaluru on Thursday evening, with police suspecting suicide. However, officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.

The deceased has been identified as Kong Agatha Ba Ithianghun Khongwet, a native of Tangmang village in Meghalaya. She had been living in Sanjeevini Nagar in Hebbal under the jurisdiction of the Kodigehalli police station.

Police suspect suicide, probe underway

According to police, the woman was found dead between 7 pm and 7.30 pm. A case has been registered as an Unnatural Death Report (UDR), and further investigation is ongoing.

“We are awaiting the autopsy report for further procedure. An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death,” a police officer said.

Officials indicated that preliminary findings point towards suspected suicide, but they have not ruled out other possibilities at this stage.

Relationship issues under scrutiny

Police sources said Khongwet had been living with her partner, Nawaz Sharif, a native of Manipur, for the past three years. The couple reportedly had frequent arguments, allegedly linked to trust issues.

On the day of the incident, an argument is said to have taken place after Khongwet suspected her partner of speaking to another woman during a phone call. Police said the partner later left the house following the altercation.

Investigators believe the woman may have taken the extreme step during this period, though this is yet to be officially confirmed.

Community seeks clarity

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Bengaluru unit, expressed condolences over the incident and called for a thorough investigation.

In a statement, the organisation said that while the case is being treated as a suspected suicide, other possibilities should not be ruled out until all facts are established. Members of the union also visited the location and extended support to the victim’s friends.

Awaiting post-mortem report

Police have questioned the live-in partner as part of the investigation and are examining all angles, including the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Officials reiterated that the final cause of death will be determined based on the post-mortem findings and forensic evidence.

Conclusion

The death of the Meghalaya woman in Bengaluru has raised concerns and prompted calls for a transparent investigation. While police suspect suicide, authorities have emphasised that conclusions will be drawn only after a detailed inquiry and medical reports are completed.
