A dramatic rescue operation by Hebbagodi police near Huskur railway station helped save the life of a 30-year-old man from Kerala who was allegedly attempting to end his life by lying on a railway track late on Wednesday night.
The incident came to light after railway staff spotted the man on the tracks at Chintala Madiwala and immediately alerted the emergency helpline 112.
Police race against time
A Hoysala patrol team attached to Hebbagodi police station received the alert around 11.30 pm and rushed to the location. Upon reaching the spot, officers found the man lying on the railway track about 200 metres from Huskur railway station.
When police personnel attempted to move him to safety, he reportedly resisted and shouted at them to stay away. Efforts to calm him down became increasingly difficult as he allegedly began throwing stones at the rescue team.
High drama during rescue
During the confrontation, the man lost his balance while throwing stones, fell onto the track and sustained minor injuries.
Determined to prevent a tragedy, the police continued their rescue efforts. After nearly 20 minutes of persuasion and struggle, officers used a rope to secure him and safely pull him away from the tracks.
The operation was completed without any serious injuries to the man or the police personnel involved.
Shifted to Nimhans for treatment
During questioning, the man identified himself as Ajay, a native of Kozhikode in Kerala. Police were informed that he was experiencing mental distress.
An ambulance was immediately arranged, and Ajay was shifted to Nimhans for medical treatment, counselling and further care.
The timely intervention by railway staff and police personnel is being credited with preventing a potential tragedy.
