A Mother’s Day WhatsApp status allegedly triggered a shocking domestic violence incident in Bengaluru, with a 26-year-old homemaker accusing her husband of assaulting her for not posting a similar tribute to her mother-in-law.
The complainant, identified as P Yamuna, a resident of Bylakonenahalli in Bengaluru North taluk, has filed a complaint against her husband Pradeep Kumar and mother-in-law at the Madanayakanahalli Police Station.
Dispute began over Mother’s Day status
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on May 10 during Mother’s Day after Yamuna uploaded a photograph of her mother on WhatsApp and shared wishes for the occasion.
Police said her husband allegedly returned home intoxicated and questioned why she had not similarly honoured his mother. The argument reportedly escalated into verbal abuse and physical assault.
The woman alleged that she was brutally beaten and later contacted her parents, who advised her to leave the house and return home safely.
Complaint filed after medical treatment
Police said Yamuna approached the station three days later after undergoing treatment for injuries. In her complaint, she accused her husband of repeated physical and mental harassment, abuse under the influence of alcohol, and dowry-related demands.
She also alleged that her mother-in-law supported the abusive behaviour.
Police issue notice to accused
Officials confirmed that a notice has been served to Pradeep Kumar and an investigation is underway. Police also stated that the woman’s parents had previously attempted to mediate between the couple on multiple occasions.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding domestic violence and emotional abuse within households.
