A dramatic encounter unfolded in Bengaluru South district as police personnel opened fire on a man accused of murdering a former Gram Panchayat leader. The incident occurred on Monday morning while officers were attempting to arrest the suspect, identified as Srinivas.

According to authorities, Srinivas was shot in the leg after he allegedly tried to assault a police constable during the operation. The police team had been tracking him since Saturday, following a brutal murder that shocked the local community.

Srinivas is accused of fatally attacking 46-year-old Nanjesh, the ex-president of Achalu Gram Panchayat, along with four other accomplices. The assault reportedly took place at a roadside eatery (dhaba) in Sathanur on Saturday night. Nanjesh was hacked to death in what police suspect was a premeditated strike.

Following the shooting, police confirmed that Srinivas was in stable condition and had been transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Legal procedures are being followed, and an investigation is ongoing to locate the other individuals involved in the crime.

This incident comes just days after a similar confrontation in Tripura, where two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers were shot dead by the Border Security Force.

The shooting in Bengaluru has reignited conversations around increasing rural crime and the rising risk faced by public representatives in volatile areas.
