Bengaluru: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the introduction of two new train services between Bengaluru and Mumbai, including a Vande Bharat sleeper train, expected to be launched in the coming months.

The second service will be a superfast train equipped with LHB coaches operating via Hubballi. These additions aim to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between the two major cities.

Vande Bharat expansion across Karnataka

The minister also confirmed that a Vande Bharat (seater) train connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru will be introduced soon. Technical challenges that previously delayed the project have now been resolved.

Railway officials stated that electrification work on the crucial Hassan–Mangaluru railway line has been completed, and testing and trials are currently underway. Safety measures, including the integration of Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) systems, have been implemented to handle the steep gradients along the coastal route.

Vaishnaw further indicated that additional Vande Bharat connectivity towards Madgaon is also planned in the near future.

Faster travel with modern infrastructure

The proposed Vande Bharat sleeper train between Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected to operate via Kalaburagi and Guntakal, with an estimated travel time of around 16 hours. Experts believe that further optimisation could bring the duration closer to 15 hours, making it a competitive alternative to air travel.

Meanwhile, the upgraded superfast service via Hubballi is expected to reduce travel time compared to the existing train operating on the route. The current service, covering approximately 1,209 km in about 24 hours, is likely to become faster after improvements.

Indigenous high-speed train manufacturing

During his visit to BEML’s Thippasandra campus in Bengaluru, Vaishnaw inaugurated a specialised complex for manufacturing high-speed B-28 trains, also referred to as India’s indigenous bullet trainsets.

He described high-speed rail technology as complex and intricate, adding that domestic development of such systems marks a major milestone for India’s engineering capabilities. He expressed optimism that faster trains would transform intercity travel, making major urban centres feel more connected.

Boost to suburban rail project

The minister also reviewed the progress of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), stating that work has improved significantly in recent months.

He noted that the appointment of a technical expert as managing director of K-RIDE, the project’s implementing agency, has accelerated progress. Land acquisition and infrastructure development have seen steady advancement, following a recent review by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Conclusion

The announcement of new train services and infrastructure developments signals a major push towards modernising India’s rail network. With faster travel times, improved safety systems, and indigenous technology, the upcoming projects are expected to enhance connectivity across Karnataka and beyond, benefiting passengers and boosting regional economic growth.
