Residents of Ashwath Nagar, Vinayaka Layout, and Geddalahalli in north Bengaluru have been dealing with unsafe and neglected conditions for over a year, as a key 1-km road connecting to Hennur-Bagalur Main Road remains clogged with garbage and construction debris. The damaged stretch, crucial for daily commuters, schoolchildren, and emergency vehicles, has turned into a danger zone, especially for children and the elderly.

Locals blame the ongoing Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project — particularly the track work between Yelahanka and Channasandra — for the worsening state of the road. Attempts to clear the area have been repeatedly stalled, as railway officials cite jurisdictional limitations and BBMP refuses involvement, stating the road falls under railway authority.

Jayashree Ananth S, a resident of Victoria Layout, expressed her concern, saying she’s never seen the road clean. “We even tried fixing it ourselves, but the railway authorities halted our efforts,” she said. “We can’t even let our kids play outside.”

Despite raising Rs 12 lakh in December 2024 to install streetlights, residents say the stretch remains cluttered and hazardous. RS Pinto, representing 160 families, said authorities have turned a blind eye. “The BBMP says it’s railway land, while railways say it isn’t their responsibility.”

BBMP admits to garbage pickup delays due to lack of disposal vehicles, while a railways official insisted public access to their land is unofficial, and waste dumping happens at night by unknown parties.
