The National Sample Survey Office (NSO), operating under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, is hosting a three-day regional training workshop in preparation for two major nationwide surveys — the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES) and the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) — as part of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS).
The NHTS is designed to gather comprehensive data on travel patterns and mobility behaviour of individuals across households. It aims to build a deeper understanding of how and why people travel, shedding light on frequency, purpose, modes of transport, and duration.
Simultaneously, the DTES will focus on collecting detailed expenditure data related to domestic travel — covering both overnight and same-day trips. According to the NSO, the insights gained will be instrumental in identifying shortcomings in the current transportation infrastructure, fine-tuning travel schedules, and improving route efficiency.
Both surveys are scheduled for launch in July 2025, and the ongoing workshop is part of the groundwork to ensure accurate data collection and uniform training across regions.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday at Shruthi Auditorium, Kendriya Sadan, Koramangala, where NSO officials and field staff will participate in hands-on sessions and technical briefings.
The initiative is a critical step towards shaping evidence-based policies for improving tourism infrastructure and transport planning across the country.
