Two weeks after 25-year-old machine learning engineer Nikhil Somwanshi was found dead in Bengaluru, alarming claims have surfaced online linking his death to intense work-related stress. Social media, particularly Reddit, has been abuzz with allegations suggesting Somwanshi took his own life due to being overburdened at work.
Somwanshi, a native of Jalgaon, Maharashtra, had recently completed a course at the Indian Institute of Science and was residing in HSR Layout. Reports say he disappeared on May 7, prompting a search by his roommate. His body was discovered on May 8.
A viral Reddit post alleged that Nikhil was part of a three-member team managing a high-stakes project, and after the other two members exited, the entire workload fell on him. The post also accused a senior manager of verbal abuse and harassment, especially targeting freshers.
In response, Ola Krutrim issued a statement, clarifying that Nikhil was on personal leave during the time of the incident. The company stated he had reached out for time off in April, citing exhaustion, and had been granted extended leave through the month.
The company expressed condolences, promising full support to the family and cooperation with authorities. Police are now investigating the claims circulating online.
This case has reignited conversations about toxic work culture, especially in high-pressure tech roles.
