Bengaluru: Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru has been declared a prohibited-items-free facility following a sustained crackdown on the possession and circulation of banned substances and articles inside its premises.

The development marks a significant change for the prison, which had previously faced repeated embarrassment over the recovery of ganja, tobacco products, beedis and cigarettes during inspections. Such seizures had raised concerns about the circulation of contraband among inmates and the effectiveness of security measures.

According to the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, continuous inspections, stricter monitoring and intensified searches have helped prevent prohibited materials from entering the facility. The drive was conducted under the supervision of Director General of Police (Prisons) Alok Kumar.

The department said recent inspections did not result in the recovery of any banned articles, following which the prison was declared free of prohibited items.

Strict inspections help curb contraband

The presence of prohibited substances and articles in prisons has been a persistent challenge for correctional authorities. Items such as ganja, tobacco, beedis and cigarettes can circulate through unauthorised channels, creating difficulties for prison administration and security personnel.

Parappana Agrahara Central Prison had come under scrutiny following repeated recoveries during routine checks. The latest crackdown involved sustained inspections and closer monitoring of activities within the prison.

Under Alok Kumar’s supervision, prison officials intensified searches to identify and prevent the possession of banned materials. The department said the continued monitoring had produced results, with recent inspections yielding no prohibited articles.

The declaration reflects the department’s effort to strengthen prison discipline and ensure that inmates follow established regulations. Maintaining the status will require continued vigilance, regular searches and effective monitoring by prison authorities.

Three internal roads renamed to promote reform

Alongside the security measures, the prison administration has introduced initiatives to strengthen the institution’s role in correction and rehabilitation.

Three internal roads within the prison have been renamed Parivarthana Patha, Sudharana Patha and Nava Sankalpa Patha.

The names convey messages of transformation, reform and a new commitment. The initiative is intended to remind inmates that imprisonment should also provide an opportunity to reflect on past actions, change behaviour and prepare for a constructive future.

The department’s approach highlights the importance of balancing security with rehabilitation. While preventing contraband and maintaining discipline remain essential responsibilities, correctional institutions are also expected to create opportunities for personal development and positive change.

Six prisoners receive 30-day sentence remission

In another rehabilitation-related initiative, six convicted prisoners who participated in a play organised for Kannada Rajyotsava have received a 30-day remission in their sentences.

The initiative recognises their participation in a cultural programme and the role of creative activities in encouraging discipline, teamwork and self-expression among inmates.

Cultural programmes can provide prisoners with opportunities to develop skills, work collectively and engage in activities beyond their daily routines. Theatre, in particular, allows participants to explore social themes and communicate ideas through performance.

The sentence remission also serves as an incentive for inmates to participate in constructive activities organised within the correctional facility.

Additional facilities for inmates with clean records

The prison department has decided to extend additional facilities to inmates who maintain a clean record for one year without violating prison regulations or using prohibited articles.

Eligible inmates will be provided access to canteen facilities and four special family visits annually.

These visits may be arranged on important personal occasions, including birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The initiative is intended to encourage good conduct while allowing inmates to maintain meaningful connections with their families.

Family contact is an important aspect of rehabilitation, as it can help prisoners retain emotional support and prepare for their eventual return to society.

The proposed benefits also create an incentive for inmates to follow prison rules and avoid involvement in activities that could compromise security.

The department’s decision links improved privileges to compliance with prison regulations, making good conduct an important factor in the administration of these facilities.

Prisoners stage mythological play with social messages

The prison has also encouraged inmates to participate in theatre and cultural activities. Prisoners recently staged a mythological play titled ‘Shani Prabhava’, which carried social messages.

An important aspect of the production was that the inmates themselves wrote, directed and performed the play. The exercise provided an opportunity for participants to take responsibility for different aspects of a theatrical production while working together towards a common goal.

Such activities can help develop communication, creativity, confidence and cooperation. They also provide a platform for inmates to engage with cultural traditions and convey meaningful messages to audiences.

The staging of the play forms part of the broader effort to use creative expression as a tool for rehabilitation.

Prison hosts first state-level sports meet for staff

In addition to initiatives involving inmates, Parappana Agrahara Central Prison hosted its first state-level sports meet for prison staff.

The event featured athletics and several sporting competitions, including badminton, tennis, kabaddi, volleyball and throwball.

The sports meet provided an opportunity for prison personnel from different units to participate in physical activities and strengthen interaction among colleagues.

Sports and fitness programmes can contribute to staff well-being, teamwork and discipline, particularly in demanding correctional environments.

Security and rehabilitation remain key priorities

The latest developments at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison reflect the department’s efforts to strengthen both security and rehabilitation.

The crackdown on prohibited items is intended to maintain discipline and prevent illegal materials from circulating inside the facility. At the same time, initiatives such as sentence remission, family visits, cultural performances and sports activities seek to encourage positive behaviour among inmates and staff.

The prison’s declaration as a prohibited-items-free facility marks an important milestone for its administration. Sustaining that status will depend on continued inspections, effective monitoring and cooperation among prison personnel and inmates.

The department’s initiatives also underline the broader purpose of correctional institutions: maintaining secure facilities while providing inmates with opportunities for reform, responsibility and a fresh beginning.
