Bengaluru: A passenger at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) landed in legal trouble after casually mentioning the word “bomb” during an argument with airline staff when he was denied boarding for arriving late.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at Terminal 1 of the airport when an IndiGo flight was scheduled to depart from Bengaluru to Raipur. Airport authorities treated the remark seriously due to strict aviation security protocols, which prohibit any reference to bombs or explosives inside airports or aircraft.

Following the incident, the airline staff filed a complaint and the passenger was taken into custody by police for questioning. He was later released on station bail.

Passenger arrived after boarding closed

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the passenger identified as Rajatesh Bera, 40, reached Gate 16 after the boarding process for the IndiGo flight had already been closed.

Airline staff informed him that he could not be allowed to board the flight because he had arrived late and the aircraft was ready for departure.

This reportedly led to an argument between the passenger and airline personnel.

During the exchange, Bera allegedly questioned the staff and asked whether the flight would only be delayed if there was a “bomb in the aircraft,” and whether that was the reason flights are sometimes stopped.

Authorities treat remark as security concern

Airport authorities immediately treated the statement as a serious security concern. Aviation security guidelines mandate strict action against any remarks that could suggest the presence of explosives or pose a potential threat.

Even casual or joking references to bombs or explosives within airport premises are taken seriously because they can trigger security alerts and disrupt airport operations.

A senior police officer said the airline staff reported the matter to airport security personnel, after which a complaint was filed with the police.

Passenger taken into custody

Based on the complaint, police detained Rajatesh Bera and took him into custody for interrogation.

Officials said the passenger cooperated during questioning and explained that he had no intention of issuing a threat.

Bera, who is originally from West Bengal and works as a musician, reportedly told the police that the remark was made casually during the argument and that he was frustrated about missing the flight.

After questioning, police released him on station bail while the case continues to be examined.

Strict aviation security norms

Security experts note that airports follow extremely strict safety protocols to prevent potential threats.

Any statement involving bombs, explosives or threats can lead to immediate security alerts, investigations and legal action.

Such incidents can also result in operational disruptions, including temporary checks of aircraft and airport facilities to ensure passenger safety.

Authorities therefore urge travellers to remain cautious with their words and avoid making any remarks that could be interpreted as a threat.

Awareness needed among passengers

Airport officials say many passengers are unaware that even a casual or sarcastic comment about explosives can trigger legal consequences.

In recent years, several passengers across Indian airports have faced police action for making similar remarks during disputes with airline staff.

Authorities emphasise that maintaining strict vigilance is essential to ensure the safety of passengers, crew and airport infrastructure.

Conclusion

The case highlights the importance of adhering to airport security protocols and maintaining appropriate conduct during travel.

Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further action will be taken if necessary.
