Bengaluru: Born in the quaint city of Guwahati on the auspicious day of Shiva Chaturdasi, Payel Sengupta entered a world steeped in tradition. In a society that longed for a son, her birth became the first spark of her lifelong battle for gender equality—a fight that would eventually pave the way for a legacy of courage and social transformation.
Early Beginnings and Academic Pursuits
From a young age, Payel was encouraged by a father whose unwavering support instilled in her the confidence to defy societal norms. She excelled academically at Guwahati’s renowned Netaji Vidya Pith and later graduated from Pandu College. Eager to broaden her horizons, she ventured to Delhi where she pursued Mass Communication at Delhi University and honed her technical skills with computer training at Aptech. Despite being stereotyped as a “village girl” by some of her peers in North India, Payel’s determination saw her shatter these preconceptions. She secured a pivotal role with Debang Mehta and played a part in Nasscom’s first software exhibition, setting the stage for a promising career.

Navigating Life’s Personal and Professional Crossroads
As her professional journey began to take flight, life presented unexpected challenges. A young marriage into a family celebrated for its ties to film and literature in Kolkata temporarily derailed her burgeoning career. The hardships that followed—a tumultuous relationship marked by personal betrayals and financial instability—could have silenced her spirit. Yet, even in these testing times, Payel’s resilience shone brightly. While supporting a husband struggling with personal demons and career setbacks, she balanced motherhood with a relentless pursuit of her own dreams.

Empowering Communities Through Social Work
Amid personal trials, Payel’s passion for social change only grew stronger. Motivated by her son’s compassion and the pressing needs of society, she founded the Bengaluru Sports Lovers Association (BSLA)—a non-profit that now champions the education and mental well-being of 185 street children. Her relentless advocacy has earned her numerous honors, including the IWD Award, recognition in the Asia Book of Records, the Karnataka Glory Award, and the Kalam Peace Award.
Not stopping there, Payel also launched Our Parampara, a platform dedicated to empowering India’s lady weavers by connecting them directly with buyers, thereby eliminating the layers of middlemen. Deeply moved by the plight of rape victims—sparked by harrowing incidents like Moumita’s case in Kolkata—she expanded her mission to include support for survivors of sexual violence, reinforcing her commitment to social justice and community healing.

A New Chapter of Love and Dedication
After overcoming the storms of her earlier life, Payel’s journey took a hopeful turn when she found a compassionate partner in Debmalya Bhattacharyya. Introduced by her son, their bond blossomed into a partnership rooted in shared values and a mutual dedication to social work. For over nine years, they have stood side by side, channeling their energies into creating a lasting impact on society.

Recognition and Innovation
Among her many accolades, one of the most memorable moments came when Payel saved a baby’s life by providing essential care without any charge—a gesture that impressed Mr. Anand Mahindra and earned her the Mahindra Rise Award. In her ever-innovative spirit, she also ventured into the world of jute jewelry, blending tradition with modern design and creating a niche that reflects her multifaceted creativity. She is also a recipient of Asian book of record, IWD and Kalam Peace Award.

Legacy of Bravery
Today, as the visionary behind the Abhaya Bravery Award, Payel Sengupta stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her journey—from a small-town girl challenging gender biases to a celebrated social reformer and entrepreneur—epitomizes the power of resilience and compassion. Through her work, she continues to uplift communities, empower vulnerable populations, and ignite the flames of change across India.
