BENGALURU: The Peenya Flyover, a crucial link on the national highway between Bengaluru and Tumkur, has reopened to all types of vehicles starting today. The flyover had been closed to heavy vehicles since late 2021 due to structural defects.

In 2021, a defect was discovered in the flyover, leading to a ban on heavy vehicle traffic for nearly two-and-a-half years. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now lifted the restriction, allowing all vehicles to use the flyover with the exception of Fridays. On Fridays, from 6 am to 6 am on Saturday, heavy vehicle movement remains prohibited due to ongoing repair work.

Heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, are allowed to use the left side of the flyover at a maximum speed of 40 kmph, as per NHAI guidelines. The 15-meter-wide and 4.2 km-long flyover had its movement restricted following the discovery of corrosion in pre-stressed cables. The NHAI had to close the flyover for 60 hours in January to conduct load tests on 240 cables. By March, the authority began replacing 1,243 pre-stressed cables, and with repairs nearing completion, it has now permitted the full resumption of traffic.

The Peenya Flyover is vital for connecting Bengaluru to over ten districts, and its reopening is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve logistics in the region.
