What looked like the queue for a major product launch at Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park on Friday morning was, in fact, for something far more nostalgic—a Philately Passport.

The Karnataka Postal Circle (KPC) recently restocked around 1,500 Philately Passports across the Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO), Mysuru Head Office and Mangaluru Head Office. Of these, more than 1,000 copies were allocated to the Bengaluru GPO, where eager buyers began lining up as early as 5.30 am, hours before sales started at 10 am.

Priced at ₹600, the passports sold out within hours, highlighting the growing popularity of this unique travel collectible.

What is a Philately Passport?

A Philately Passport is a travel-themed booklet that allows people to collect Permanent Pictorial Cancellations (PPCs)—special commemorative postal stamps issued at designated post offices located near heritage sites, museums, wildlife destinations and other tourist attractions across Karnataka.

While philately traditionally refers to the hobby of collecting postage stamps and studying postal history, the passport adds a travel experience by encouraging visitors to explore destinations while collecting unique postmarks.

A nostalgic hobby finds new fans

Launched by the Karnataka Postal Circle in 2024, the initiative has gained significant popularity, especially among young travellers and social media users.

Each passport contains space for around 100 commemorative stamps, turning every journey into a treasure hunt. Travellers visit participating post offices, collect the special cancellations and gradually complete their passport.

The concept has resonated with people seeking slower, more meaningful travel experiences beyond popular tourist attractions.

The overwhelming response to the latest restock reflects a renewed interest in philately and heritage tourism. Many collectors see the passports as a unique way to preserve memories while discovering lesser-known landmarks across Karnataka.
