Bengaluru: A 32-year-old woman from Kerala died in a tragic road accident near Bengaluru after she fell from a two-wheeler and was run over by a goods vehicle. The incident in Ananth Nagar, near Electronics City Phase II, has sparked anger among local residents over the condition of roads in the area.
Woman dies on way to work
The victim, identified as Medha Akarsh, was travelling pillion with a colleague when the accident occurred on Wednesday. She worked with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in Bengaluru.
According to preliminary information, a car ahead suddenly braked, following which the two-wheeler lost control on the poorly maintained road. Medha fell onto the road and was subsequently run over by a goods vehicle travelling behind them.
She died at the spot.
Residents protest over road condition
The tragedy has intensified long-standing concerns among residents about potholes, waterlogging and repeated road digging in Ananth Nagar and surrounding areas.
Hundreds of residents took part in a candlelight march following Medha’s death, while more than 1,000 people later gathered to demand immediate action and safer roads. Residents alleged that repeated repair work had failed to resolve the problem, with potholes reportedly returning soon after resurfacing.
Locals said the roads are used daily by motorists, pedestrians and school buses, making the poor condition a serious safety concern.
Minister responds to criticism
Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad expressed condolences to Medha’s family but said the presence of a pothole did not mean that the entire infrastructure was poor.
Meanwhile, residents have demanded accountability and immediate repairs rather than further delays. Civic authorities have agreed to meet residents and contractors to discuss the condition of the roads and possible remedial measures.
The incident has once again raised questions about road safety and the need for timely maintenance of Bengaluru’s rapidly developing outskirts.
