Electricity consumers in Bengaluru will see an increase in their monthly bills from May, after the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a tariff hike of 56 paise per unit.

How much more you will pay

The revised tariff means households and businesses will pay an additional ₹0.56 per unit of electricity consumed. While the increase may appear modest, the cumulative impact could be noticeable for families with higher power usage.

For instance, a household consuming 200 units per month may see an increase of around ₹112 in their bill, while heavier consumption could push costs even higher.

Reason behind the hike

The tariff revision has been introduced to help power distribution companies recover rising operational costs, including fuel expenses and infrastructure maintenance. Officials say the adjustment is necessary to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.

Impact on households and businesses

The hike is expected to affect both residential and commercial consumers. Small businesses, shops, and service providers may also face higher operational costs, which could indirectly influence prices of goods and services.

For households already dealing with rising living expenses, the increase adds to financial pressure.

Consumers urged to manage usage

Experts advise consumers to adopt energy-saving measures to offset the impact. Using energy-efficient appliances, switching off unused devices, and optimising consumption during peak hours can help reduce bills.

Broader cost-of-living concern

The electricity tariff hike comes at a time when Bengaluru residents are already facing rising costs in housing, food, and transportation. The combined effect is likely to further strain monthly budgets
