Several parts of Karnataka experienced the first spell of pre-monsoon rainfall on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from the rising summer heat, with Bengaluru witnessing intense showers accompanied by hailstorm and strong winds.
Rain and hailstorm lash Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, heavy rainfall was reported across multiple areas including Sanjayanagar, Yelahanka, and Devanahalli, where lightning, gusty winds, and a brief hailstorm were observed. Moderate to heavy showers were also recorded in Konanakunte, Kanakapura Road, RR Nagar, Banashankari 6th Stage, Sampigehalli, Kathriguppe, Horamavu, and parts of the central business district.
Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the hailstorm activity was short-lived but intense in certain pockets.
Temperature dips across the city
The rainfall had an immediate cooling effect, with Bengaluru city recording a drop in maximum temperature by 1.3°C to 32.3°C. At HAL airport, temperatures fell by 1.2°C to 32°C, offering relief from the prevailing heat conditions.
Rain spreads across Karnataka
Apart from Bengaluru, several regions across the state also witnessed rainfall activity, signalling the onset of pre-monsoon conditions. Weather officials indicated that such spells are likely to continue in the coming days.
Forecast for coming days
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers in parts of Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mandya, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Hassan, Kodagu, Davangere, Mysuru, and Chamarajanagar on March 18.
Advisory for residents
Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious during thunderstorms and gusty winds. The disaster management team has urged people to reach out via helpline 1533 or WhatsApp 94806 85700 in case of emergencies.
The pre-monsoon showers are expected to provide intermittent relief while also marking the gradual seasonal transition across Karnataka.
