A professor at a private university in Bengaluru has been suspended following serious allegations of religious discrimination after he allegedly called a Muslim student a “terrorist” multiple times during a classroom session. The incident, which occurred on March 24, came to light after a video recorded by a student went viral on X.

🎓 Classroom incident sparks outrage

According to allegations, Professor Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande repeatedly targeted a student identified as Affan during a lecture, referring to him as a “terrorist” at least 13 times in front of nearly 60 students.

The professor is also accused of making several derogatory remarks, including linking the student to global conflicts and making statements perceived as deeply offensive and inappropriate. Students described the classroom atmosphere as hostile and humiliating.

📹 Viral video and serious allegations

The incident gained widespread attention after the video surfaced online, triggering strong reactions from student groups and the public. Concerns have also been raised over alleged deletion of classroom CCTV footage, which could have served as crucial evidence.

Additionally, some students who reportedly supported the victim have alleged that they were suspended under the pretext of “talking during class,” further intensifying concerns around fairness and transparency.

⚖️ Action taken, enquiry underway

Following public backlash, the university administration suspended the professor and initiated an internal enquiry. Sources indicate that while the professor submitted a written apology to the administration, he did not directly apologise to the student. The department head is said to have conveyed an apology on his behalf.

The National Students’ Union of India has lodged a formal complaint, terming the incident as religious hate speech and demanding strict action against those responsible.

🧭 Wider concerns on campus discrimination

The episode has sparked a broader debate on the need for accountability and inclusivity within educational institutions. Students and activists have called for stronger safeguards to prevent discrimination and ensure that campuses remain safe spaces for all.

As the enquiry progresses, the case continues to draw attention, highlighting the importance of sensitivity, respect, and ethical conduct in academic environments.
