Bengaluru: In a move aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Tulu-speaking community, the Karnataka State Policy & Planning Commission has submitted a proposal to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to establish ‘Tuluvas Bhavan’ in Mangaluru, Udupi and Bengaluru.
The proposed initiative seeks to create a network of cultural and institutional centres dedicated to safeguarding the rich socio-cultural heritage of the Tuluva community while also fostering development opportunities.
Multi-functional cultural hubs planned
According to the proposal, the ‘Tuluvas Bhavan’ will function as a multi-purpose institutional platform focusing on cultural preservation, education, entrepreneurship and community engagement.
A primary centre is proposed in Mangaluru, envisioned as a coastal heritage hub. Meanwhile, Udupi is expected to host a satellite centre focusing on research and promotion of the Tulu language, while Bengaluru will serve as an urban hub catering to networking, advocacy, and engagement with the diaspora.
Focus on language and traditional art forms
Commission member S Mohanadass Hegde said the initiative aims to address long-pending aspirations of the Tulu-speaking population.
“It is designed to preserve the Tulu language, promote traditional art forms like Yakshagana, and protect folk traditions, while simultaneously opening new avenues for youth,” he stated.
The centres are expected to act as repositories of cultural knowledge and provide a structured framework for documentation, research, and dissemination of Tulu heritage.
Boost to youth and entrepreneurship
Beyond cultural preservation, the Bhavan is also proposed as a platform for skill development and entrepreneurship. The initiative aims to equip young members of the community with opportunities in education, training, and business development.
Officials believe that integrating cultural identity with economic growth can create sustainable opportunities while strengthening community bonds.
Aligning with broader development goals
The proposal aligns with the State government’s broader vision of inclusive development and cultural preservation. By establishing dedicated centres, the initiative seeks to institutionalise support for regional languages and traditions that often lack formal platforms.
The Bhavan is also expected to serve as a meeting point for cultural exchange and collaboration, both within Karnataka and among the global Tulu diaspora.
Conclusion
The proposed ‘Tuluvas Bhavan’ represents a significant step towards preserving the unique identity of the Tulu-speaking community while fostering growth and innovation. If approved, the initiative could play a vital role in strengthening cultural roots and creating new opportunities for future generations.
