Bengaluru: Police have arrested a 19-year-old man from Rajasthan for allegedly burgling diamond and gold jewellery worth about ₹3 crore from a house in north Bengaluru. The accused was traced to his native village and brought to the city on a transit warrant.
Burglary reported at house in Yelahanka
According to police, the accused has been identified as Velaram Meena alias Sunil, a resident of Salumbar district in Rajasthan.
He allegedly broke into a house located in Judicial Layout in Yelahanka on February 15 and stole a large quantity of diamond and gold jewellery.
Investigators said the accused gained entry into the house through the terrace door before carrying out the theft.
The house had been rented by a couple. Police said the husband works in the United States while the wife resides in Bengaluru and travels to the US to meet him approximately once every six months.
Complaint filed by relative
The theft came to light after the valuables were found missing from the house. Subsequently, the couple’s nephew approached the police and filed a complaint regarding the burglary.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the accused and recover the stolen jewellery.
Officials said the case involved the theft of high-value ornaments, prompting investigators to form a team to examine leads and identify possible suspects.
Accused traced to Rajasthan
During the course of the investigation, police managed to trace the accused to his native village in Rajasthan.
He was located in a village under the jurisdiction of the Gingla police station in the state.
Police teams detained him there and later brought him to Bengaluru after obtaining a transit warrant from the local court.
Confession during interrogation
According to a statement issued by the police, the accused allegedly confessed to committing the burglary during interrogation.
Investigators said he admitted to breaking into the house in Judicial Layout and stealing the diamond and gold jewellery kept inside.
Police further stated that the accused disclosed that the stolen jewellery had been stored at his residence in Rajasthan.
Jewellery worth ₹3 crore recovered
Based on the information provided by the accused, police conducted a search and recovered the stolen valuables.
Officials said that about 1.833 kg of diamond and gold jewellery was recovered from his possession.
The recovered ornaments are estimated to be worth approximately ₹3 crore.
Police said the recovery of the valuables is a significant breakthrough in the case, as it ensured that the stolen property could be returned to the rightful owners.
Accused remanded to judicial custody
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a court in Bengaluru.
The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was involved in any other burglary cases.
Accused worked as tile worker
During the investigation, police also learned that the accused was working as a tile worker.
Authorities are examining whether he had any prior knowledge about the house or the valuables stored there before committing the burglary.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and verify the sequence of events related to the incident.
