Bengaluru: A two-month fight by Bengaluru-based interior designer Sani Krishna, 32, for compensation following a serious bike-taxi accident has secured partial relief, with Rapido agreeing to process her entire eligible medical expenses through its insurance partner.

Sani was injured in an accident on June 17 while travelling by bike taxi from Byrasandra to Domlur for work. A collision resulted in a tractor running over her, leaving her with serious injuries.

Rapido agrees to waive insurance cap

Rapido said all bike-taxi rides booked through its platform are covered by an insurance policy for customers and captains. The standard policy, however, has a maximum claim limit of ₹1 lakh, while Sani’s medical treatment has cost more than ₹20 lakh.

After initially offering only the maximum insurance amount, Rapido has now said it will facilitate the processing of the entire eligible medical expense claim without applying the standard policy cap.

The company said the payment would be subject to submission and verification of the required documents by its insurer.

Injured woman seeks accountability

Sani’s advocate had issued a legal notice to Rapido on August 6, seeking an apology and compensation covering her medical expenses.

While the latest decision has brought some relief, Sani said her fight for accountability was not over. She said Rapido had not yet directly communicated its decision to her and maintained that she wanted the company to take responsibility and apologise for the incident.

Sani has undergone several surgeries, including plastic surgery, after suffering multiple injuries. She lost several teeth and fractured seven ribs in the accident and continues to recover.

Accident circumstances under investigation

Rapido said the decision to facilitate the full eligible medical claim was taken considering the exceptional circumstances of the case.

The company also said the circumstances surrounding the accident, including questions regarding the captain’s authorisation and conduct, are under investigation.

Sani remains unable to travel or return to work as she continues her recovery from what she described as a near-fatal accident.
