Cricket fans heading to M Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL matches may soon be able to travel free on Namma Metro, as discussions are underway between Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) management.

According to government sources, the proposal aims to provide complimentary round-trip Metro travel for match ticket holders, helping ease traffic congestion around the stadium.

Proposal for QR-code Metro entry

If the plan is approved, spectators with valid IPL match tickets would be able to scan a QR code printed on their physical or digital ticket at the Metro’s Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates.

The proposed arrangement would allow fans to travel between any Metro station and Cubbon Park Metro Station, which is the nearest station to Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Under this system, fans would not need to purchase Metro tokens or pay through cards, making travel to the stadium smoother on match days.

Discussions with key stakeholders

Sources said discussions have already taken place between several stakeholders, including:

  • BMRCL
  • RCB management
  • DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd
  • Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA)

However, officials clarified that the proposal is still under discussion, and a final decision is expected in the coming days.

Aim to reduce traffic congestion

Officials believe the initiative could benefit both commuters and the city.

By encouraging fans to use public transport instead of private vehicles, the scheme could reduce traffic congestion around the stadium, especially during high-profile IPL matches.

At the same time, the arrangement could also generate sponsored revenue for BMRCL.

Metro and bus services to extend on match days

The 19th edition of the IPL will begin with defending champions RCB facing Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

RCB will play five home matches in Bengaluru during the season.

To manage large crowds on match days, Namma Metro plans to extend the departure time of the last trains from all six terminal stations until 1 am.

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is also expected to operate additional buses and extended services for fans travelling to and from the stadium.

Previously, BMRCL had issued return paper tickets on match days, as issuing tokens becomes difficult at Cubbon Park Metro station, where thousands of spectators gather after matches.
