In Bengaluru’s Electronics City Phase 1, a tenant at Prestige Sunrise Park is making headlines for an unusual standoff — he has been incurring a daily charge of ₹100 simply for keeping his shoe rack outside his apartment.

Prestige Sunrise Park, home to 1,046 flats, recently launched a cleanup drive to free common areas of personal possessions. This included potted plants, shoe stands, and storage items placed in hallways. About half the occupants were found flouting these shared space norms.

The Residents’ Association issued written warnings and held discussions with homeowners, offering them a two-month window to comply. While there was some pushback initially, most residents eventually adhered to the policy.

By the end of the fourth week, only two flats remained non-compliant. One of those residents removed their belongings following repeated reminders. The second, however, has continued to defy the directive.

In a surprising move, this resident prepaid ₹15,000 towards future penalties and requested the association not to disturb him further. Over the past eight months, he has accumulated fines totaling ₹24,000 — all paid without protest, yet the shoe rack still stands.

Arun Prasad, the association’s president, revealed plans to double the daily fine to ₹200 in hopes of resolving the issue. He emphasized that fire safety laws require corridors to be free of any obstructions to ensure swift evacuation during emergencies.
