The restoration of Kithaganur Lake in east Bengaluru has significantly improved the health of the 25-acre water body, increasing its storage capacity by 22 per cent and strengthening the local ecosystem.

The rejuvenation project was undertaken by Daimler Truck Innovation Centre India (DTICI) in partnership with United Way Bengaluru (UWBe) under the latter’s ‘Wake the Lake’ initiative, which focuses on restoring degraded lakes across the city.

The restored lake was formally handed over to the local gram panchayat on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day.

Years of degradation reversed

Kithaganur Lake had suffered from years of neglect due to silt accumulation, sewage inflow, encroachments and blocked feeder channels. These issues had severely reduced the lake’s storage capacity and affected its ecological balance.

As part of the restoration effort, the project team carried out scientific desilting, revived feeder channels and improved water flow into the lake. Measures were also taken to prevent future degradation and ensure long-term sustainability.

Focus on biodiversity and conservation

Beyond improving water storage, the initiative also aimed to restore the lake’s ecological value. Fencing was installed to protect the area, while biodiversity enhancement measures were introduced to support local flora and fauna.

According to project officials, the lake now supports 65 species of plants, birds and other wildlife, creating a healthier environment for both nature and nearby communities.

The project also included community engagement activities to encourage local residents to participate in conservation efforts and safeguard the water body in the future.

Benefits for residents and environment

The rejuvenated lake is expected to benefit nearly 24,000 residents living in surrounding areas by improving groundwater recharge, supporting biodiversity and enhancing environmental sustainability.

Officials estimate that the restored ecosystem will sequester around nine tonnes of carbon annually, contributing to climate resilience and urban environmental health.
