A 19-year-old robbery accused was arrested after being shot in the leg by police when he allegedly attacked officers with a dagger while resisting arrest on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The accused, identified as Jeeva, is a known rowdy-sheeter and was wanted in connection with a robbery case registered at Hebbagodi Police Station on June 2. Police said he and his associates had allegedly assaulted a man and robbed him of cash and a mobile phone near Tirupalya before fleeing the scene.
Arrest operation turns violent
Acting on a tip-off received late on Wednesday night, police tracked Jeeva to an area near Singena Agrahara, where he was reportedly hiding among eucalyptus plantations and bushes in an agricultural field.
When officers attempted to arrest him, Jeeva allegedly tried to escape and attacked the police team with a dagger-like weapon. A police constable sustained injuries during the operation.
Police said they fired two warning shots into the air and repeatedly ordered the accused to surrender. However, he allegedly continued advancing towards the officers with the weapon. To protect the team and prevent further harm, a sub-inspector fired at Jeeva’s right leg, following which he was overpowered and taken into custody.
Multiple criminal cases against accused
Both the injured constable and the accused were shifted to hospital and are reported to be out of danger. Police said Jeeva has seven criminal cases registered against him, including robbery, extortion, dacoity, assault and attempt-to-murder cases across Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu.
Further investigation is underway.
