Bengaluru: A rowdy-sheeter accused in a murder case was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attacked officers with stones and attempted to escape during a spot inspection in Bengaluru, officials said.

The incident took place in the limits of Talaghattapura Police Station when officers took the accused to a location as part of the investigation to recover evidence linked to the murder case. During the inspection, the accused allegedly turned violent, pelted stones at the police team and tried to flee from the spot.

Police said the officers repeatedly warned him to surrender. However, when he allegedly continued his attack and escape attempt, a police officer opened fire in self-defence, striking the accused in the leg. The injured man was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he is reported to be out of danger.

Two policemen injured in the incident

Two police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation. They were also admitted to hospital and are receiving treatment. Officials said their condition is stable.

Police have registered the necessary cases and initiated further legal proceedings. Senior officers are also reviewing the circumstances that led to the police firing, which is standard procedure in such cases.

Investigation continues

The accused is believed to be a known rowdy-sheeter with multiple criminal cases against him. Investigators said the evidence recovery operation was being conducted in connection with a recent murder case when the incident occurred.

Authorities have reiterated that police personnel are authorised to use force in self-defence when faced with an immediate threat while carrying out official duties. Further investigation into the case is underway.
