Bengaluru: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Bengaluru Division, in coordination with the State Excise Department, seized 19.2 kg of ganja-infused chocolates from a suspect at Banaswadi Railway Station, uncovering what officials believe is a new method of drug trafficking.
The operation was carried out on Wednesday under Operation Narcos, an initiative aimed at curbing the movement of narcotics and other illegal activities through the railway network.
Suspect intercepted during inspection
According to the RPF, personnel conducting routine checks noticed a man behaving suspiciously near the four-wheeler parking area of Banaswadi Railway Station.
The suspect was carrying a red trolley suitcase. Upon being questioned, he allegedly admitted that the luggage contained ganja chocolates.
RPF officials immediately alerted the State Excise Department, whose officers reached the spot to inspect the contents.
Nearly 20 kg of ganja chocolates seized
Officials examined the suitcase and recovered 19.2 kg of ganja-infused chocolates, estimated to be worth around ₹48,500.
Following the completion of legal formalities, the contraband was seized by the Excise Department, and the suspect was arrested.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway.
First such case for Bengaluru RPF
Senior RPF officials said this was the first time the force had detected the transportation of ganja concealed in chocolates through the railway network.
The seizure was made during a special drive targeting narcotics trafficking, theft of passenger belongings, human trafficking, child trafficking and unauthorised hawkers at railway stations.
Officials said the investigation will focus on identifying the source of the ganja chocolates and determining whether a larger drug distribution network is involved.
