Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s iconic Russell Market in Shivajinagar is set for a major transformation, with a new blueprint proposing modern facilities while seeking to preserve the character of the historic market.
The redevelopment plan focuses on improving hygiene, storage and waste management, particularly for the large volume of fish, meat, fruits and vegetables handled at the market.
New facilities planned for Russell Market
The proposed revamp includes dedicated fish-cleaning bays, cold storage facilities and better arrangements for handling market waste. A composting plant is also part of the proposed waste-management infrastructure.
The measures are aimed at improving hygiene and making the market cleaner and more efficient for traders and customers.
The market is among Bengaluru’s well-known traditional shopping destinations and has long served residents seeking fresh produce and meat.
Heritage character to be retained
The redevelopment is expected to balance modern infrastructure with Russell Market’s heritage character.
Earlier plans for the market’s redevelopment had proposed modern amenities including lifts, escalators, parking, cold storage and cleaner spaces for cutting meat, while retaining its historic appearance.
The BBMP had also proposed preparing a detailed project report for the redevelopment, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 40 crore.
Better waste management in focus
Waste generated from fresh produce and meat has been a longstanding challenge at major city markets. The proposed composting facility could help process organic waste more systematically instead of allowing it to accumulate around the market.
Improved cold storage could also help traders handle perishable products more safely and reduce wastage.
The proposed changes are expected to give the historic market a cleaner and more organised future while preserving its importance as a neighbourhood shopping hub.
