A life rooted in soil and sustainability

Hailing from Bagaha village in West Champaran district of Bihar, Sarita Kumari describes herself as a daughter of India’s sacred soil. Raised in a mud house surrounded by a kola bari (homestead garden), cattle, and open nature, her childhood was shaped by simplicity, discipline, and a close relationship with the land. Growing up along the banks of the Kosi and Gandak rivers, she says her bond with nature was instinctive and inherited.

Even today, her home nurtures nearly 200 plants, reflecting a way of life centred on coexistence with the environment. Sarita actively prepares organic manure, tends to plants, and grows leafy greens and vegetables, making soil care a daily practice rather than a symbolic gesture.

‘The soil is our mother’

For Sarita Kumari, conservation is deeply personal. She believes the soil is a living mother that sustains humanity and must be protected with patience and responsibility. Her efforts, though modest in scale, underline a powerful message—that environmental protection begins at home and grows through consistent everyday actions.

Recognition of quiet, sustained action

The Bhoomi Putri Samman celebrates individuals whose lives reflect harmony with nature rather than headline-grabbing activism. By honouring Sarita Kumari, the Abhaya Bravery Awards highlight the importance of sustainable living, indigenous wisdom, and grassroots environmental stewardship in an era of climate uncertainty.
