Bengaluru: A Class 7 student allegedly attempted suicide after being punished by a teacher over a minor classroom incident at a school in Bengaluru’s Mariyappanapalya area. Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the child was subjected to harassment or severe punishment that may have driven him to take the extreme step.
The incident took place on Tuesday. According to police, the boy informed his sister before attempting suicide by hanging himself at home. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Teacher allegedly reprimanded student over classroom incident
Preliminary findings suggest the student was reprimanded by a teacher over alleged mischief involving another student. Police said he was also asked to step out of the classroom following the incident.
Investigators believe the matter initially appeared to be a minor classroom issue. However, they are examining whether there was any form of harassment or excessive punishment that may have contributed to the boy’s emotional distress.
Police await parents’ complaint
Police said no formal complaint has been lodged by the student’s parents, who are still coping with the trauma of the incident. Authorities have arranged counselling support for the family.
A senior police officer said a detailed inquiry is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether any action is warranted against the school or those involved.
Incident raises concerns over student wellbeing
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment in schools. Experts have repeatedly stressed that disciplinary measures should be handled with sensitivity, keeping students’ emotional and mental wellbeing in mind.
Police said further investigation is in progress, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings
