Srinagar: Six tourists from Bengaluru were injured after a lift collapsed at a hotel in the Hyderpora area of Srinagar on Friday, raising fresh concerns over safety standards in hospitality establishments in the region.
Incident at hotel in Hyderpora
The mishap occurred at Hotel Arison Luxury, a newly constructed property where the group was staying during their visit to Kashmir. According to officials, the lift suddenly collapsed while the tourists were inside, leading to injuries.
Emergency services responded promptly, and the injured were shifted to Bone and Joint Hospital for treatment. Officials said that all six individuals are currently in stable condition.
Injured identified
The injured tourists have been identified as Vinkatesh (65), D. Mangula (54), Kushalla (18), Pankaja (16), Venkatalakshmamma (60), and Sowbhagya (60). All of them are residents of Bengaluru and were on a visit to the Valley.
Authorities confirmed that the group was temporarily staying at the hotel when the incident occurred.
Cause of collapse under investigation
The exact cause of the lift collapse is yet to be determined. Officials stated that no immediate explanation has been provided by the hotel management regarding the incident.
A probe has been initiated to ascertain whether the collapse was due to a technical fault, poor maintenance, or any form of negligence. Authorities are expected to inspect the building’s safety compliance and lift installation standards as part of the investigation.
Safety concerns in focus
The incident has once again brought attention to safety measures in hotels, particularly those catering to tourists. With the influx of visitors to Kashmir, ensuring proper infrastructure maintenance and adherence to safety norms has become increasingly important.
Experts stress the need for regular inspection of lifts and other critical facilities in hotels to prevent such accidents.
Similar incidents raise alarm
Incidents involving lift malfunctions have been reported in other parts of the country as well, highlighting a broader concern about infrastructure safety. Earlier this year, a lift collapse in a residential building in Mumbai had also resulted in multiple injuries, triggering panic among residents.
Such repeated cases underline the importance of strict enforcement of safety regulations and timely audits of mechanical systems in both residential and commercial buildings.
Conclusion
While the injured tourists are reported to be out of danger, the Srinagar lift collapse has raised serious questions about safety compliance in hospitality establishments. Authorities are expected to take necessary action based on the findings of the investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
