Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has identified faster expansion of Namma Metro as one of his government’s key priorities, acknowledging that the city’s rapid transit network has not grown quickly enough to keep pace with increasing demand.

In an exclusive interaction with Moneycontrol, the minister said Bengaluru must significantly improve both investment and execution if it hopes to build a public transport system capable of supporting its expanding population and economy.

Metro growth needs to accelerate

Gowda noted that Bengaluru’s Metro network has been expanding at a relatively slow pace despite the city’s growing transport requirements. He stressed that improving the speed of project implementation is critical to reducing traffic congestion and encouraging greater use of public transport.

According to the minister, Bengaluru can no longer afford delays in major transit projects, especially as the city’s population and vehicle numbers continue to rise.

Better investment and execution required

The minister said future success would depend not only on securing adequate funding but also on improving coordination among agencies involved in planning and execution.

He emphasised that infrastructure projects must move beyond lengthy approval processes and focus on timely delivery. Faster execution, he said, would help residents experience the benefits of improved connectivity sooner.

Public transport key to Bengaluru’s future

Gowda reiterated that expanding public transport infrastructure remains essential for Bengaluru’s long-term development. Metro rail, suburban rail, buses and other mass transit systems must work together to provide efficient and sustainable mobility options.

Urban transport experts have consistently highlighted the need for a stronger public transport network to address the city’s traffic challenges and support future growth.

Focus on mobility and infrastructure

The minister’s remarks come as the state government continues to pursue multiple infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity across Bengaluru. Along with Metro expansion, efforts are underway to upgrade roads, improve waste management systems and strengthen civic infrastructure.

Gowda said the government’s objective is to ensure Bengaluru remains competitive, liveable and well-connected while meeting the needs of its rapidly growing population
