A police sub-inspector lost his life and three others sustained serious injuries after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus veered off course and overturned into a roadside drain near Bengaluru on Monday morning.
The accident occurred around 11:30 am on Kanakapura Road in Ramanagara district. The bus, en route to Bengaluru, reportedly lost control while negotiating a left turn and crashed into multiple two-wheelers before tumbling into a drainage canal.
Surveillance footage reviewed by India Today shows the red KSRTC bus suddenly swerving, colliding with several motorcycles, dragging them along its path before toppling into the drain. Onlookers rushed to the scene immediately to assist the injured.
Among the victims was 52-year-old Sub-Inspector Nagraj, who died instantly at the spot. The other injured individuals were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. The bus passengers reportedly escaped with minor injuries.
Preliminary findings suggest a mechanical fault — specifically, a snapped steering cable — may have caused the driver to lose control. Authorities have registered a case of negligent homicide against the driver.
Local residents expressed concern over repeated accidents on this stretch and demanded better safety checks and regular vehicle maintenance.
This incident has once again brought attention to the dangers of poor vehicle upkeep and the need for stronger oversight in public transportation.
