Bengaluru: A violent altercation between two groups of Kerala-origin students in Bengaluru’s Thammenahalli area has come under police scrutiny after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media. The confrontation, which occurred outside a private college on North Bengaluru’s Hesaraghatta Road, has raised concerns over student violence and safety in the area.
Video captures street fight
The videos, reportedly recorded by local residents on Wednesday, show a group of youths — including a few boys and a girl — standing in a narrow residential street. In the footage, one of the boys appears shirtless, surrounded by others. Moments later, four men are seen entering the street armed with sticks and attacking the shirtless youth. Despite being outnumbered, the boy attempts to defend himself as blows rain down on him.
The commotion draws attention from nearby residents, who can be heard shouting in the background. Within seconds, the attackers flee the scene as people start gathering around. The videos, though grainy, depict a chaotic scuffle that quickly spiralled into violence.
Complaint reveals deeper dispute
Following the incident, the police received a complaint from a woman who alleged that one of the men involved had been harassing her for nearly two years. According to her statement, the accused, along with four others, arrived at her house late at night, hurled verbal abuse, and issued serious threats.
The complaint further claims that the group threatened to plant illegal substances in her room to falsely implicate her. When a friend of the woman tried to intervene, the accused allegedly attacked him with sticks, inflicting bleeding injuries.
Neighbours reportedly came to the woman’s aid after hearing the commotion, prompting the group to flee before the police could arrive. The injured youth was later taken for medical examination.
Case registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Police officials from the local jurisdiction confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), India’s newly implemented criminal code that replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) earlier this year. The case includes charges related to assault, criminal intimidation, and trespassing.
An officer from the Hesaraghatta police station stated, “We have identified the individuals involved and an investigation is underway. The victim’s statement and video evidence are being examined carefully. Further arrests will be made once verification is complete.”
Community and college response
Local residents expressed alarm over the incident, saying such violent confrontations were rare in their otherwise quiet neighbourhood. A shopkeeper who witnessed part of the scuffle said, “We heard shouting and rushed outside. By the time we came, one boy was injured and bleeding. People quickly gathered, and the others ran away.”
Authorities at the nearby private college have reportedly been informed about the incident. While the institution has not yet released an official statement, sources suggest that the students involved may face disciplinary action depending on the outcome of the police probe.
Social media adds pressure
Clips of the fight began circulating across multiple social media platforms late Wednesday evening. Several users tagged Bengaluru Police in their posts, demanding action. The viral nature of the footage intensified public interest and prompted police to expedite their inquiry.
Experts have warned that the spread of such videos without context can escalate tensions among student groups and communities. “Social media often amplifies conflicts. It’s crucial that investigations are based on verified facts rather than online speculation,” said a sociologist from a Bengaluru university.
Investigation continues
As of Friday, police have recorded statements from multiple witnesses and are in the process of collecting CCTV footage from nearby buildings to corroborate the events. Preliminary findings suggest that the assault stemmed from personal enmity linked to the ongoing harassment complaint, rather than a larger group rivalry.
Authorities have urged the public not to share the violent footage further, citing privacy and safety concerns for those involved.
Conclusion
The Thammenahalli street fight has once again highlighted the intersection of social media, youth aggression, and law enforcement in Bengaluru. While police have assured a fair and swift investigation, the case underscores the need for stronger mechanisms to address interpersonal conflicts among students before they spiral into violence.
