Bengaluru-origin dancer, choreographer, and teacher Supriya Desai has made history by becoming the first Indian-origin artiste to receive a proclamation from the Mayor of Morrisville, North Carolina, in the United States. This honour was bestowed upon her in recognition of her contributions to Indian classical dance and her efforts in promoting cultural education through her Payal Dance Academy, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.

Supriya, an exponent of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, has dedicated over three decades to teaching and performing these ancient art forms. Her academy has nurtured the talents of more than 400 students, guiding them with expertise and passion. Morrisville Mayor T J Cawley, in his proclamation, praised her commitment, stating:

“Guru Supriya Desai has been a shining beacon of classical dance captivating audiences for 30 years with her extraordinary talent and dedication. Her dedication to teaching has nurtured the talents of over 400 students over the past 30 years, guiding them with the wisdom and passion to achieve excellence in the art of dance, thereby ensuring the preservation and propagation of Indian classical dance traditions.”

The Journey of Supriya Desai

Born in Bengaluru, Supriya’s love for dance began at a young age, and over the years, she trained in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi under some of the finest teachers in India. She carried this passion with her when she moved to the United States, where she established the Payal Dance Academy in North Carolina. Over the past 30 years, she has worked tirelessly to introduce Indian classical dance to the local community, expanding cultural horizons and nurturing artistic talent in her students.

In 2022, Supriya’s academy marked its 30th anniversary, a milestone that celebrated not only her work as a teacher but also her contributions to the cultural fabric of the Indian diaspora in the US. Supriya’s performances and productions have reached audiences across the globe, with highlights including a 15-city US dance tour of her first major dance drama production, *Meera*, which featured four professional dancers from India.

Recognition and Community Engagement

In addition to the proclamation from the Mayor, Supriya has been recognised for her work in India as well. She was conferred the prestigious ‘Karnataka Kalashree’ title by the government of Karnataka, acknowledging her contribution to preserving and popularising Indian classical dance.

Supriya’s impact extends beyond her dance academy. She is a founding member and the first president of the Sampige Triangle Kannada Association, a key organisation supporting Kannada language and culture in the region. Her leadership in organisations such as AKKA and Navika further highlights her commitment to the Kannada-speaking community in North Carolina.

Cultural Advocate and Cricket Enthusiast

Supriya’s passion for promoting Indian culture is not confined to dance alone. Along with her husband, Surendra, she plays an active role in the Indian Classical Music and Dance Society (ICMDS) of North Carolina, an organisation that has been instrumental in bringing Indian cultural events to the Triangle area. Their work has helped bridge the gap between India and the US, creating a cultural exchange that benefits both communities.

Interestingly, Supriya’s contributions aren’t limited to the world of dance. A former cricket player at National College, Jayanagar, she has also been involved in promoting the sport in the Triangle area of North Carolina. She served as the Promotion and Media Outreach Head for USA Cricket from December 2022 to August 2023, during the crucial period when the United States was selected as the co-host for the ICC T20I World Cup 2024. Her leadership in cricket promotion underscores her diverse interests and her desire to represent India on a global stage through various platforms.

A Legacy of Cultural Preservation

Supriya Desai’s recognition by the Morrisville Mayor is a testament to her unwavering dedication to preserving and promoting Indian classical arts in the United States. Her Payal Dance Academy has become a beacon of cultural education, empowering the next generation to embrace their heritage while also sharing it with a wider audience. Through her work in dance, music, and sports, Supriya has contributed immensely to the Indian diaspora and the local community in North Carolina.

As she continues her work, Supriya remains an inspiration to aspiring dancers and cultural advocates, proving that passion and dedication can transcend borders and leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
