The number of newly registered private cars in Bengaluru has reached an all-time high, with nearly 52,000 units registered between January and April this year. This marks a 7% increase compared to the same period last year.

According to data from the Karnataka Transport Department, the trend of increasing car registrations has been consistent over the years. In 2021, approximately 46,367 cars were registered during the first four months, followed by around 47,000 in 2022 and 48,462 in 2023.

Need for Enhanced Public Transport

Experts emphasize that an affordable and efficient public transport system is crucial to address the rising number of private vehicles on city roads. Without improvements in public transit capacity and network, private car ownership is expected to continue rising.

While various mass rapid transit projects like metro and suburban rail are underway, delays in their completion and the prioritization of road infrastructure projects contribute to the problem.

Call for Better Policies

There is a growing consensus among mobility experts for the government to implement comprehensive policies that discourage private car usage and enhance public transport options. This includes improving first and last-mile connectivity, offering affordable and high-frequency services, and strengthening feeder routes for existing metro lines.

Addressing Traffic Congestion

Efforts to promote a shift from private vehicles to public transport must align with commuter preferences, focusing on affordability, convenience, and time-saving aspects of the journey. By prioritizing these factors, policymakers can mitigate traffic congestion and promote sustainable urban mobility.
