Bengaluru: A former software engineer allegedly shot dead his wife, a bank manager, on Tuesday evening, barely a week after receiving a legal divorce notice from her, in a case that has shocked the city and highlighted the tragic consequences of prolonged marital conflict.

The incident

The victim, identified as Bhuvaneshwari (39), was fatally shot around 6.30 pm while she was returning home from work. According to police and preliminary investigation details reported by ANI, the accused, Balamurugan (40), intercepted her on the road and fired at her using a pistol.

Bhuvaneshwari collapsed at the spot and was rushed to Shanbagh Hospital by passers-by and local residents. Doctors declared her dead on arrival, police officials said. Soon after the incident, the accused walked into a nearby police station, confessed to the crime and surrendered himself.

Police confirmed that the murder followed a long-standing marital dispute between the couple.

Victim and accused profiles

Bhuvaneshwari was working as an Assistant Manager at the Union Bank of India. Colleagues described her as professional and dedicated, with no prior indication that she was facing a life-threatening situation.

The accused, Balamurugan, is a former software engineer who had previously worked with a prominent IT firm. Investigators said he had been unemployed for some time and was living separately from his wife.

The couple were married in 2011 and have two children. Due to frequent disagreements and alleged mistrust, they had been living apart for the past 18 months.

Marriage under strain

Police sources said the relationship had deteriorated over time due to repeated misunderstandings. The accused reportedly suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship, an allegation that investigators say has not been substantiated.

Unable to cope with the constant conflict, Bhuvaneshwari had decided to seek legal separation. She sent a formal divorce notice to Balamurugan last week, which police believe acted as the immediate trigger for the crime.

Officers said the accused strongly opposed the idea of separation and was unwilling to accept the end of the marriage.

Months of tracking and surveillance

Investigators revealed that Balamurugan had allegedly been tracking his wife’s movements for several months. After the couple separated, Bhuvaneshwari moved to a new residence to distance herself from her husband.

Police said the accused spent months trying to trace the location where his wife and children were staying. Around four months ago, after discovering her whereabouts, he reportedly shifted to a nearby locality to keep an eye on her daily routine.

“He was monitoring her movements and waiting for an opportunity,” a senior police officer said, adding that the accused appeared to have planned the attack rather than acting on sudden impulse.

The day of the crime

On Tuesday evening, the accused allegedly waited for Bhuvaneshwari to finish work and begin her walk home. As she was on the road, he intercepted her and opened fire at close range.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing the woman collapse. The accused did not attempt to flee and instead walked directly to the police station after the shooting, where he admitted to killing his wife.

Police recovered the weapon used in the crime and have launched an investigation to determine how the accused procured the firearm.

Police investigation underway

Balamurugan has been taken into police custody, and a case of murder has been registered against him. Officers are questioning him to establish the full sequence of events and to verify whether the firearm was illegally obtained.

“The source of the weapon is a key focus of the investigation,” a police official said. “We are also examining whether there was any prior criminal intent or assistance involved.”

The children of the couple are currently with relatives, and authorities said steps are being taken to ensure their safety and welfare.

A grim reminder

The incident has sparked concern among residents and on social media, with many pointing to the growing need for mental health support, mediation mechanisms and stronger intervention in cases of domestic disputes.

Experts say prolonged marital conflicts, when combined with obsession and access to weapons, can turn deadly if warning signs are ignored.

Conclusion

The killing of Bhuvaneshwari underscores the devastating consequences of unresolved domestic conflict and alleged stalking. As the investigation continues, police say they will pursue strict legal action while also focusing on the welfare of the couple’s children, who have been left behind in the wake of the tragedy.
