Bengaluru: A Kolkata-based software professional has sparked conversations about work-life balance after revealing that he turned down a ₹65 lakh per annum job offer in Bengaluru in favour of a ₹45 lakh package with Cognizant in his hometown, prioritising family and personal fulfilment over a higher salary.
Tamal Bhattacharjee, 37, a software professional and bassist with Kolkata bands Punch and Indicred, said the decision was driven by his desire to care for his ageing parents while continuing to pursue his passion for music.
Higher salary took a back seat
For many professionals, a ₹65 lakh annual package would be a dream opportunity. However, Tamal chose to forgo the Bengaluru offer, believing that financial gains alone could not replace the value of being close to family and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
He accepted a ₹45 lakh per annum offer from Cognizant in Kolkata, allowing him to remain in his hometown without sacrificing his personal commitments.
Family and music influenced the decision
Tamal said staying with his parents was one of the biggest reasons behind his choice. Alongside his career in technology, he is an active musician who performs as a bass guitarist with local bands, making it difficult to relocate without giving up an important part of his life.
His decision reflects a growing trend among professionals who are increasingly valuing mental wellbeing, family responsibilities and personal fulfilment over higher salaries and rapid career progression.
