A woman in Bengaluru leaped from a moving autorickshaw late Thursday night to protect herself from an intoxicated driver, her husband revealed.
The incident occurred after she booked a ride via the Namma Yatri app to travel from Horamavu to Thanisandra. Sharing the ordeal on ‘X’, her husband recounted that the driver, heavily drunk, deviated towards Hebbal instead of the intended route. Despite her repeated pleas to stop, the driver ignored her, leaving her no choice but to jump from the autorickshaw to escape harm.
Highlighting a glaring issue, he criticized the app for its lack of immediate customer support. “Namma Yatri has no helpline for emergencies. They ask users to wait 24 hours for a response—how can anyone wait that long in a crisis? What about the safety of women?” he questioned while tagging the Bengaluru police to address the concern.
In response, the police assured swift action and began investigating the matter. Meanwhile, Namma Yatri issued a statement apologizing for the distressing experience and requested detailed ride information via direct message, vowing to address the issue promptly.
This incident has sparked discussions about passenger safety and the need for real-time support on ride-hailing platforms. Bengaluru residents are urging stricter driver checks and robust emergency response mechanisms to prevent such occurrences.
