Police have arrested three people for allegedly posing as police officers and robbing a real estate businessman at his residence in Byadarahalli in Bengaluru.
According to police, the robbery took place on February 16 at the house of Hombegowda (53), a realtor and contractor from BEL Layout. The accused reportedly entered the house dressed as police personnel and looted cash and gold ornaments.
Friend allegedly masterminded robbery
Investigations revealed that the crime was allegedly planned by the victim’s friend, Bettegowda, a stamp vendor who had knowledge of the businessman’s financial dealings.
Police said Hombegowda had asked Bettegowda to prepare property documents related to the sale of a site. During this process, the accused reportedly learned about the money the businessman had received from the property transaction.
Bettegowda allegedly shared the information with Nagendra, who had recently been released on parole, and asked him to execute the robbery with the help of his associate Bachchan.
Robbery carried out in police uniform
Investigators said the accused arranged police uniforms from Shivajinagar by claiming they were required for a film shoot.
Wearing the uniforms, the accused went to the businessman’s house posing as police officials. They reportedly threatened the family members with a gun and a knife, tied up the couple and searched the house before fleeing with valuables.
Police said the gang managed to escape with around ₹20 lakh in cash and nearly 500 grams of gold jewellery.
Police recover cash and gold
During the investigation, police arrested Nagendra and his associate Bachchan. Further interrogation led to the arrest of Bettegowda, who is believed to have planned the crime.
Officials said about ₹14 lakh in cash and around 570 grams of gold jewellery have been recovered from the accused so far.
Police suspect that a few more people may have been involved in the crime and further investigation is underway.
