Three members of a family were killed on Sunday when their car overturned and plunged into a ditch along the Bengaluru–Mangaluru National Highway near Nagamangala in Mandya district. Police said the crash occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a bridge parapet.
Accident on busy national highway
According to police, the car was travelling from Bengaluru towards Chikkamagaluru when the driver suddenly lost control near Nagamangala. The impact with the bridge caused the vehicle to overturn before rolling into a roadside ditch. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the spot, but the injuries proved fatal for the occupants.
Victims identified
The deceased have been identified as Chandregowda (62) and Sarojamma (57), both residents of Chikkamagaluru. Police sources said they were returning to their hometown when the accident took place. A third victim, also a relative, succumbed to injuries at the scene; further details were awaited at the time of reporting.
Police investigation under way
Nagamangala police have registered a case and begun a preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident. Officers said overspeeding or a sudden manoeuvre could have led to the driver losing control, though a mechanical assessment of the vehicle is also being conducted.
Traffic along the busy corridor was briefly disrupted as the vehicle was removed and forensic checks were carried out. Authorities have urged motorists travelling along the Bengaluru–Mangaluru highway to exercise caution, especially during early morning and late-night hours when visibility tends to be lower.
